The term Snowflake obsidian comes from the combination of cristobalite nodules in obsidian. The cristobalite spots are called spherulites. That's the sciency stuff anyway. The spiritual aspects of the stone are filled with fun and fanciful attributes such as fire and mystical powers.
Obsidian is considered by some to be the Stone of Scorpio. In astrological circles it is thought that the Stone of Scorpio contains the element of fire and is related to "Root Chakra." The Root Chakra is located at the very bottom of the human spine.
Snowflake Obsidian also falls under the sign of Sagittarius. Therefore, snowflake obsidian is sometimes associated with the astrological sign of Virgo even though obsidian is considered a gemstone of Aquarius.
"Snowflake" obsidian is a shiny black, glass-like stone with gray and white markings. These lighter colored splotches appear like beautiful patterns of snowflakes against a striking black background.
Most of us appreciate snowflake obsidian for its beauty and interesting appearance, however, some people believe snowflake obsidian has mysterious, mystical, metaphysical powers. According to lore, the Apache indigenous Americans believed that tears formed whenever Apache warriors leaped to their death off cliffs rather than be captured by an enemy. Hence the term Apache Tear.
